Sri Lanka

In the Indian Ocean the island state of Sri Lanka is situated, which used to be known by the name of Ceylon. It used to be a centre of Buddhist tradition, but nowadays it has very many different religions. Since the civil war in May 2009, Sri Lanka has become increasingly popular with tourists from all over the world, and not without reason.

Especially the south and west are interesting for tourists. Although the large, popular beaches make it seem as if only beach lovers can have a good time here, this is very far from the truth.

The country has a good infrastructure, so there are plenty of possibilities to discover the entire island! There may be fewer animals, and the wildlife may be less diverse, than on an African safari, for example. But the many reptiles, birds and monkeys are nevertheless stunning. You should also try and get used to seeing the many elephants, as they are simply walking down the street with their attendants.

After very turbulent years -the tsunami in 2004 and the civil war- Sri Lanka is gradually becoming more popular as a tourist destination, and people who are looking for a fairly original destination in Southeast Asia will definitely love it here!
